We’re Engaged!

I actually made these myself!

I actually made these myself!

People have been asking when we are getting married or at least engaged and I finally have an update for you. We’re engaged!

We have been talking about getting engaged for a while now. We both knew we’d eventually get married but we weren’t in any rush. So how did it happen?

Since we had been talking about getting married for a while and she had already picked out a ring she knew we’d be getting engaged sometime in the next year. I’m not the creative type but I was told I have to come up with a good way to propose so she’d have a good story.

I couldn’t think of anything so she told me to “Google something”… go figure. Google should solve all of our problems!

Well, I couldn’t think of anything until last week. Then the idea hit me. I’d use cupcakes! The problem was I’d have to find a time to cook them when she wasn’t around without her being suspicious. The only time I could think of was while she was working.

I made sure to leave work on time so I’d have three or four hours to pull it off. I stopped and got the ingredients on the way home, made the cupcakes, iced them and wrote WILL YOU MARRY ME? with one letter on each cupcake. I put the open ring box in the middle and covered the cupcakes with a cake saver so she couldn’t see the message or the ring.

She always calls on her way home from work and I told her I had made a tasty present for her. She was still clueless and I told her she’d have to wait until she got home to find out what it was.

She came home and it took her a few minutes to discover the cupcakes under the cake saver. When she finally looked she was very surprised and happy and of course she said yes. So, we’re engaged!

What Does That Mean For Money Life and More?

Nothing is going to change. I’m going to continue writing about personal finance but now I’ll have even more experience to write about!

I’ll be able to discuss how we’re planning on having a small and frugal wedding, how we’ll combine our finances when we get married and many other topics I haven’t been able to discuss from a personal perspective before.

So now you know!

Any ideas of topics you’d like to read about or things I should keep track of for future articles? What did you wish was different about when you were engaged and planning your wedding? Any tips? Let me know!

  1. Congrats! Just throwing an idea out there, but have you guys considered eloping? We did, and it was perfect for us!

  2. Congratulations! Smooth work on the cup cakes too. I did something similar, but with chocolate sauce on a plate surrounding a dessert.

  3. WOOHOOO! 🙂 I’m looking forward to more relationship/finance articles.

  4. Congratulations! what a nice idea, the cupcakes look lovely.

  5. Congratulations! What a sweet surprise!

  6. Congratulations! My wife and I had two frugal weddings. We spent about $1500 combined between the two. And they were the best two days of our lives!

  7. wahoo! *happy dance* Congrats!

  8. Congrats Lance! Great work on taking the time off and making the cupcakes, they look great!

  9. Congratulations! You can always open a bakery with these new skills. 🙂

  10. Congratulations! How sweet!

  11. Congratulations! The good thing about life changes like this are the new adventures you’ll be able to write about. Oh, and that happiness stuff, too. Sometimes I want to buy a house just to have something new to wrote about. 🙂 Best of luck to you both!

  12. Awesome Lance. Congratulations and I hope you enjoy the wedding planning process, eventhough men aren’t really that involved. Nice job on the proposal. I am happy for you.

  14. Nice work! Congrats Lance! Happy for you two.

  15. Congrats on the engagement! When’s the wedding? Ready to merge finances??

  16. Congratulations!!! Seems there are a lot of engagements happening out there in the PF world! 🙂

  17. I’ve heard of some creative stories before, so I kind of wish I could do mine a little better. We actually took a trip to Steamboat (CO) to get engaged…my first attempt didn’t pay out as I had planned a specific day when we were going to go to the top of the mountain and site see a little. Well, there happened to be a ton of people up there and I didn’t want to do it with hundreds of people around.

So, I waited until later that evening and proposed on the Gondola as we were headed to a nice restaurant on the highest part of one of the peaks. It was kind of cool and I’m pretty sure she’ll remember it.

Congrats though Lance!! I’m excited for you!

  18. Congratulations! That’s such a sweet surprise, no pun intended. Bf and I aren’t engaged or married yet so I don’t have any frugal wedding advice, but I know there are lots of folks around who have had amazing weddings on a budget.

  19. Congrats on your engagement, Lance. What a sweet idea – literally! Even though she knew that you were going to pop the question, I’m sure it was a nice surprise and that she was thrilled. You’re a fiance now, not just a boyfriend!

I’m sure we’ll have lots of posts about wedding costs to look forward to 🙂

  20. Hearty congratulations!;-) The cup cakes are sure to enter the annals of your family, to be passed down the generations to come!

  21. That is awesome Lance, congratulations.

  22. Nate Fancher says:

    Congrats Lance!!!

  23. Very, very cool Lance! Great work and congratulations!

  24. Congratulations to you both!!! I feel like often there is a lot of pressure to make proposals really unique (my friend got proposed to while coming down from a skydive) but I think you struck a really nice balance.

  25. YAY! Congrats to you both! And yes I say elope…after being married and divorced, the wedding is not nearly as important as the marriage, and spending your life together. Save your money and go on a rocking honeymoon! 😀

  26. Congrats dude! Musta been scary and exhilaring at the same time.
