The following post is sponsored by Leesa, which offered me a King Leesa Mattress for $1 in exchange for an honest review. This is our 100% honest opinion of the mattress.
My wife and I were desperately in need of a new mattress.
Our old mattress had gotten to the point where we both ended up rolling to the middle of the bed.
That meant neither one of us slept well.
So, I decided to look into online mattresses.
I came across Leesa while doing my research and they offered to send me a King size Leesa Mattress for $1 in exchange for an honest review.
We decided to take them up on the offer.
How Our Leesa Mattress Arrived
Our Leesa mattress arrived when we weren’t home. When we returned, we found our Leesa mattress sitting on our front porch in this box.
The box looked like it had taken a beating, but it looked like the packaging probably protected the mattress as designed.
Unpackaging The Leesa Mattress
After taking a look at the packaging, I dragged the mattress box inside my foyer.
I quickly realized that moving the mattress wouldn’t be an easy job for just one person despite the handles on the box.
So, I got my wife to assist me which made moving the mattress to our master bedroom much easier.
Once the mattress was in our bedroom we opened up the top of the box.
There were some instructions printed on the flaps of the box, but that was it.
We followed the instructions to remove and unpack the mattress.
Getting the mattress out of the box was a bit of a challenge but it wasn’t too bad.
After all, you only have to unpack it once. There is plenty of plastic wrap to remove. I imagine all the plastic wrap is to make sure the mattress stays tightly wrapped.
After we removed all of the plastic wrap, we moved the mattress onto our boxsprings, unfolded it, then cut the shrink wrap and watched the mattress expand within seconds.
It’s pretty amazing to watch.
When cutting the shrink wrap, make sure you don’t accidentally cut the mattress covering.
If you’re excited to test out your new mattress, I could see how someone could accidentally cut the mattress fabric.
After the mattress expanded, we laid on it to see what we thought.
More on that in a second.
Keep in mind, you should wait 24 hours for the Leesa mattress to fully expand.
What We Like When It Comes To Mattresses
My wife and I aren’t mattress experts, but we know a mattress we like after we sleep on it.
My preference is generally a firmer mattress and my wife prefers mattresses that are a bit softer so she can sink into them a bit.
Of course, that means we don’t always like the same mattresses. However, we usually end up finding one that works for both of us.
We had no clue if the Leesa mattress would work for us, but we were willing to give it a shot.
Our First Impression Of The Leesa Mattress
At first, we placed our Leesa mattress on our old box springs.
Leesa says you need a proper foundation for the bed which we quickly found out. Without a foundation, the mattress just doesn’t seem to have enough support.
Since we didn’t have a foundation, we resigned to the fact that we’d be sleeping on the floor for the next few weeks as we tested out the mattress.
We moved the mattress to the floor so we’d have the proper hard foundation under the mattress that it needs.
Once we did that, the Leesa mattress offered a bit more support. It still had plenty of give to it, but it offered enough support for us to feel like it’d be comfortable to sleep on.
We did notice that if we put all of our weight in one area on the mattress, such as kneeling on it to get up or down, it felt like we could compress most of the mattress down to the floor.
Finally, there was definitely a new mattress smell after unpackaging the Leesa. It wasn’t an offensive odor, but you could definitely smell it more the closer you got to the mattress.
Our First Night On The Leesa Mattress
Our first night sleeping on the Leesa mattress was a success.
While we knew it’d take a while to adjust to sleeping on a new mattress, we didn’t wake up with any aches or pains and didn’t wake up often throughout the night.
The mattress didn’t feel hot like some foam mattresses do and it was summer in Florida, so we figured we’d be safe on that front going forward. You could still smell a bit of the new mattress smell, but it wasn’t overpowering.
Overall, I thought the mattress was really comfortable and my wife thought it was much better than our old spring mattress after the first night. Stick around to see what we thought after weeks of sleeping on the Leesa mattress.
A Breakdown Of The Leesa Mattress And How It Works
The Leesa mattress is a three-layer foam mattress designed to give you a perfect night’s sleep. It’s even made in the United States which is awesome if you like to support jobs in the US.
On top, there is a 2″ Avena® foam top layer. This layer allows air circulation to keep you cooler at night.
The middle layer is a 2″ memory foam. The memory foam gives you pressure relief and allows body contouring.
Finally, the 6″ base layer is a dense foam used to add strength, durability and support all while avoiding a feel that’s too firm.
Why Buying A Leesa Mattress Could Be A Smart Financial Move
Foam mattresses aren’t always cheap, especially if you buy the brand name mattresses in a mattress store.
Instead of spending thousands on a mattress in a mattress store, online companies have started selling direct to the consumer like Leesa has.
Selling direct to consumers allows Leesa to cut costs, such as showroom rent and labor needed to run those showrooms, and pass part of the savings along to you.
That’s why buying directly from Leesa could save you a significant amount over buying a similar mattress in a mattress showroom.
Leesa Offers A 100-Night Risk-Free Trial
Of course, you won’t be able to test the mattress out before you buy it. That’s why Leesa offers a 100-night free in-home trial.
If you don’t like the mattress for any reason within the first 100 days, simply let them know and they’ll arrange a pickup and a refund. There are charges for pickups if you live in Alaska or Hawaii, so be aware of that.
Leesa does ask that you try the mattress for at least 30 days before asking for a refund. This gives your body a chance to adjust to the new mattress so you have a true feel for how you’ll like it over the long run.
Additionally, if you received any free gifts, such as pillows, when you purchased your Leesa mattress, the value of those items will be deducted from your refund unless you return them, too.
Our View Of The Leesa Mattress After Weeks Of Sleeping On It
We waited a few weeks after we received our Leesa mattress to write this review so we could give our bodies time to adjust to the new mattress.
We slept on the mattress for a few weeks and overall thought the Leesa mattress was a huge improvement over our almost decade old mattress.
I found myself liking the slight sinking feeling I got when I slept in the bed. It felt like it cradled my body which was nice.
However, my wife thought the Leesa was a bit too soft for her liking. Since we had also tried out a firmer online bed recently, we decided to stick with our new mattress and use the Leesa mattress for a guest bed.
We actually had some guests try out the Leesa mattress for almost a week while they were visiting and they loved it, so I’d say that’s a success, too.
The one major downside to the Leesa was the sides offer no support when you get in and out of bed.
If you sit on the side of the mattress when you get in and get out of bed, all of your weight will be in one spot and you’ll sink basically to the foundation.
When you’re laying in the bed and your weight is distributed, it isn’t as big of a deal.
Want To Try Out A Leesa Mattress In Person?
If you want to try out a Leesa mattress in person before buying it, you can do so at most West Elm locations. While there isn’t one near us, there may be one near you.
Leesa’s Focus On Giving Back
When you buy a Leesa mattress, you’re not just buying a mattress with a great trial period. Leesa is focused on giving back, too.
They donate one mattress to a shelter for every ten they sell which is pretty amazing and a great cause. Other efforts to give back include planting one tree for each mattress sold and donating 1% of each of their employee’s time to volunteer for local causes.
Buying A Leesa Mattress Could Be A Smart Money Move
If you’re looking into buying a traditional or memory foam mattress in a mattress store, make sure you at least consider online mattresses like Leesa before you make your purchase.
Often, online mattresses like Leesa could save you a significant amount of money versus buying a mattress in a typical mattress store. You owe it to yourself to give them a shot, especially with a 100-night risk-free trial.
In the worst case scenario, you end up hating the mattress and returning it for a full refund.
