Welcome to the final Money Manifesto income report of 2017, which will also include our full year review.
Before we dive into this month’s income report, I’d like to remind everyone why I publish these posts.
I don’t write these posts to brag that I earn a full-time income online at home while being a stay at home dad, although it is a pretty sweet life.
I write these income reports because I want to show others that they can build an online business just like I have.
I also write these reports to motivate myself to continue meeting my income goals, which I just recently increased last month.
If I’m ever about to fall short of an income goal, I’m usually looking to see if there is anything reasonable I can do to meet the goal so I don’t have to post about not reaching my goal.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s take a look at what I’ve learned about self employment and recap the last year of my online business.
Stick around to the end of the post to see my total 2017 online income.
2017 Recap – What I’ve Learned About Self-Employment
2017 was a crazy year in my personal life. Honestly, I’m shocked I’ve been able to keep my income up this year.
Late in 2016 we welcome our son to the world and 2017 was the first full year of his life. My wife was able to stay home for the first 12 weeks of our son’s life, so I didn’t get to take on full responsibility until she returned to work in early 2017.
Once she returned to work, I watched my son four days a week while my wife slept during the day and worked 12 hour night shifts. This left little time to fit everything else that needed to be done in both my personal and blogging life.
The biggest thing I’ve learned is in 2017 is you need to make time for things that need to get done. In the past, I’d have plenty of time to get around to finishing my to do list. This year I had to set aside specific blocks of time to get stuff done.
Once my son finally started napping on a regular basis and sleeping through the night, I dedicated his nap times and the time after he went to bed to getting work done, but only on days when my wife worked.
When my wife is home, I usually have more flexibility as to when I can get my work done.
Being a stay at home dad and running an online business hasn’t been easy, but it has totally been worth it.
December 2017 Income – $5,485.31
December was a great month to close out 2017. After raising my income goal to $4,000 per month, I still managed to beat my goal by over $1,000.
December’s income of $5,485.31 is even more outstanding after considering the fact that we took a cruise and took a trip to visit family during the month in addition to the Christmas holiday.
Here’s how I earned my income in December.
Freelance writing is one of my largest income sources and it didn’t disappoint in December. While I didn’t make a crazy amount of money from any one client, I earned a decent amount from multiple clients.
In some ways, that’s even better than having one client providing most of my freelance writing income. If a client and I ever have to part ways, I still have plenty of other income coming in.
If you want to get started earning money by freelance writing online, I highly suggest Holly Johnson’s Earn More Writing course.
I’ve taken it myself and would have saved a ton of time and earned a lot more money had I taken the course before I started freelance writing.
It even had plenty of tips I’ve used to increase my freelance writing income as an established freelance writer.
Traditional advertising income continues to surprise me after my move from MyFinance to Mediavine.
The revenue from ads has actually become a decent part of my monthly income. What’s even more awesome is I’ve decided to use this income to improve Money Manifesto.
While I may not use every penny, the goal is to grow the site so I can continue earning more income, hopefully in a more passive manner than through freelance writing.
Branded content, when I am paid to post about a service or product here on Money Manifesto, continues to earn me some income here and there. That said, it isn’t a huge portion of my earnings.
At this point, I don’t plan to grow this area of my business unless something comes my way. That said, if something amazing pops up, I’ll definitely take advantage.
The key here is all branded content must help my readers and be worth the time it takes me to manage the campaign.
Affiliate income is something I plan to attack at some point during 2018. While I make a little bit of affiliate income here and there, I’m leaving a lot of money on the table.
Unfortunately, affiliate income is harder to crack, so I plan to take Michelle’s Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing course this year.
Full Year 2017 Income – $49,086.09
In 2017, I earned just under $50,000 coming in at $49,086.09. I had a couple rough months in the middle of the year as I battled with figuring out how I wanted to earn income while being a stay at home dad.
Luckily, I figured things out and closed out the year on a strong note with two months at over $5,000 each. Hopefully $5,000+ months become the norm as I continue to grow my business through 2018.
You Can Earn Money Online, Too
Earning money online isn’t easy, but it is definitely doable. I didn’t start earning money online until I started this blog.
Thankfully, I started my blog the right way using WordPress and buying hosting. This allowed me to run my site the way I wanted to and led to my first online income, selling a direct advertisement on my site.
If you want complete control over your online home, which you should, I highly recommend starting a self-hosted WordPress website using SiteGround.
In fact, I believe in it so much I set up this step by step guide to show you exactly how to get started.
Whether you want to become the next millionaire blogger or you simply want to earn a few hundreds extra dollars on the side each month, a website helps show people you’re serious.
If you want to be a virtual assistant or freelance writer, a website is the perfect spot to show off your work.
The key is getting started. If you’ve been thinking about trying to earn income online, get started today.
You won’t regret it.
