6 Fun Free or Cheap Family Activities To Do This Summer

6 fun free or cheap things to do this summerThe weather has started to heat up here in Florida, so we’re already thinking of fun free summer activities we can add to the list of things to do for the summer.

No matter where you live, you should find at least one or two ideas for some awesome activities for this summer.

Here are six fun free or cheap things we plan on doing this summer to entertain ourselves.

Go Swimming

Tori and I have a ton of options to go swimming.

Lucky for us, we can go swimming at the beach in the Gulf of Mexico, head to a local lake or cold spring, head to our neighborhood community pool, go swimming at my parents’ pool or head to one of the local city run pools.

No matter where you live, you likely have a free or cheap swimming option.

It is a great way to cool off when the summer heat reaches unbearable levels.

Go to a Park

When the weather is a bit cooler, you can head to one of your local parks to explore.

We have many free local parks as well as some state parks that only charge a small entrance fee. You can bring a picnic lunch and just walk or bike around for a cheap fun day.

Go to the Cheap Movies

If you are lucky enough to have a cheap movie theater in your area, you can take your family to the movies. We have a $2 per ticket theater that shows movies just before they head to DVD.

If you are smart and skip the concessions like we normally do, you can get in and out for less than $10 for a few hours of fun in a nice, cool theater.

Have a Netflix Weekend

Don’t have a cheap movie theater in your area? Bummer! Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to watch good movies without having to even leave your home. Simply order a month’s worth of Netflix for less than $10 and you can stream as many movies or TV shows as you’d like.

You can easily make a whole, lazy weekend out of Netflix and allow everyone to watch a movie they want to see. You could even make some popcorn, if you’d like.

Have a Board Game Night

Board games are another fun and cheap activity you can do in the heat of the summer. Chances are, you already own plenty of fun board games. Pull out your favorites and designate one weekend night as board game night. You’ll have a blast and you won’t have to use any digital devices in the process.

Head to the Library

Far too many people forget about all of the fun things you can get from your local library. On top of the obvious activity of checking out physical books, many libraries now allow you to check out e-books on your favorite e-reader, DVDs or other content.

Libraries often put on lectures or events that kids can attend when they’re out of school for the summer, too. Check out your local library to see what they have to offer and see if they have a summer schedule of events.

No matter where you live, whether it is on the Gulf of Mexico like us, or in the middle of the country like Colorado, there are plenty of fun things you can do this summer for free or at least pretty cheap.

Take advantage of the air conditioned indoors when it is unbearably hot outside and take advantage of the great outdoors when they weather is absolutely beautiful.

  1. The library is one of our favorite. So much to offer beyond books. Movies, music, classes.

  2. My daughter definitely loves to go swimming! I’m planning to bring her to swimming pool again next week.
